An exhibition of work by three contemporary artists who each use mark making as a way of recording, developing and communicating ideas.

Curated by Amanda Game (Freelance curator and Consulting Lead Director of IC:Innovative Craft) and Anita Taylor (artist, Professor and Director of the Jerwood Drawing Prize), INSCRIPTION: drawing, making, thinking is the fourth in the Jerwood Visual Arts Encounters Series. The exhibition explores the different approaches to inscription through three contemporary artists, David Connearn, Philip Eglin and Charlotte Hodes.

As part of the INSCRIPTION exhibition a series of Monday evening events will take place from 6 - 8pm.

18 January
FLUX
- Ceramics has become an endangered subject within art education, whilst at the same time this medium is enjoying a renaissance in contemporary art. This discussion explores the nature of these challenges to the discipline in education and the traditional professional worlds, and the diminishing boundaries between design, applied arts and fine art. We are delighted to announce the speakers are Roger Law (ceramicist and creator of the puppets in iconic TV show Spitting Image), Charlotte Hodes (artist) and Felicity Aylieff (ceramicist and sculptor).

1 February
Collage to Montage A film by Susan Steinberg. Emmy award-winning New York documentary filmmaker Steinberg, has followed Charlotte Hodes’ working practice for the 18 months leading up to the exhibition, documenting both the production of the ceramic pieces and the creation of large scale papercut pieces. Following the film Susan and Charlotte will answer questions.

The following two events will take place on the 8 & 15 February (specific date for each event and guest speakers to be announced shortly on www.jerwoodvisualarts.org

Tracing thought: working drawings - realising intention - A panel discussion focused on the role and value of drawing as a methodology for the generation and realisation of creative practices. Guest speakers to be announced.

Embodied thinking: drawing and making as an embodiment of thinking - A panel discussion with special guest artists whose work deals with embodiment as subject and content through a drawing or making practice. Guest speakers to be announced.

Jerwood Drawing Prize 2009 on tour

Now in its 13th year the Jerwood Drawing Prize is the largest and longest running annual open exhibition dedicated to drawing in the UK.

Over 2300 entries were submitted this year for consideration by the distinguished panel of judges comprising of Tania Kovats (artist); Roger Malbert (Senior Curator, Hayward Touring, Southbank Centre, London) and Nicholas Usherwood (writer, art critic & curator). The shortlist includes established artists as well as relative newcomers and students fresh from art school. Mit Senoj, a.k.a. Tim Jones, from Macclesfield, Cheshire, was named First Prize Winner and awarded £6000 for his drawing The Drum. A Second Prize of £3000 was awarded to George Charman for his image Ruin 3. Two Student Awards of £1000 each were also awarded to Frances Stacey and Roxanne Goffin.

Selected by respected painters Phillip Allen, Alexis Harding and Mali Morris this vibrant exhibition of 26 emerging artists provides a challenging and textured visual journey; one which continues to ask questions of and about painting in the context of contemporary visual arts practice

The exhibition offers an exciting exhibiting opportunity to artists who are at a particular stage in their development, falling between student and recognised artist status; all have graduated since 2000. Artists in the exhibition include:

Lee Broughall, Carla Busuttil, Michael Cassidy, Aidan Doherty, Paul Doran, Aleana Egan, Fergus Feehily, Alistair Frost, Geraldine Gliubislavich, Andrew Graves, Gabriel Hartley, William Monk, Ryan Mosley, Matthew Musgrave, Scott O’Rourke, Jamie Partridge, Oliver Perkins, Emma Puntis, Rebert Rush, Ellen Stanford, Alan Stanners, Paul John Taylor, Phoebe Unwin, David Webb, Mathew Weir and Sam Windett.
