For the Sake of the Image investigates the reciprocal relationship between moving image and sound, considering sound not merely as an accompaniment to the moving image but exploring how the force of one multiplies the power of the other.
Featuring the work of emerging artists Asnat Austerlitz, Richard Bevan, Juan Fontanive, Paul O’Kane, Mark Raidpere and Dan Walwin as well as exhibition curator, Suki Chan.

Evening Events
As part of the exhibition For the Sake of the Image a series of Monday evening events will take place from 6 - 8pm.
8th March
Curator Suki Chan will be in conversation with exhibiting artists Asnat Austerlitz, Richard Bevan, Juan Fontanive, Paul O’Kane and Dan Walwin. Discussion Chaired by Sarah Williams.
22nd March
A round table discussion chaired by Gareth Evans with Larry Sider and Nina Danino followed by a film screening of works by Nina Danino and Emily Richardson.

Jerwood Drawing Prize 2009 on tour

Now in its 14th year the Jerwood Drawing Prize is the largest and longest running annual open exhibition dedicated to drawing in the UK.
For 2009 over 2300 entries were submitted this year for consideration by the distinguished panel of judges comprising of Tania Kovats (artist); Roger Malbert (Senior Curator, Hayward Touring, Southbank Centre, London) and Nicholas Usherwood (writer, art critic & curator). The shortlist included established artists as well as relative newcomers and students fresh from art school. Mit Senoj, a.k.a. Tim Jones, from Macclesfield, Cheshire, was named First Prize Winner and awarded £6000 for his drawing The Drum. A Second Prize of £3000 was awarded to George Charman for his image Ruin 3. Two Student Awards of £1000 each were also awarded to Frances Stacey and Roxanne Goffin.

Jerwood Contemporary Makers 2010
This year’s exhibition will explore the notion of making from a variety of creative perspectives. Selectors Hans Stofer, Richard Slee and Freddie Robins – three of the most inventive names in the visual arts - have chosen 29 makers to take part, each of whom will exhibit one work and receive an equal share of a £30,000 prize fund.

The exhibition, designed by Michael Marriot, will take visitors on a visual journey through the different approaches to the art of making, highlighting its importance as a visual arts discipline.
Jerwood Contemporary Makers is the UK’s only award for the applied arts.

INSCRIPTION: drawing, making, thinking
A limited edition publication is currently being produced to document the recent Jerwood Encounters show INSCRIPTION: drawing, making, thinking. Curated by Amanda Game and Anita Taylor, this exhibition featured the work of three artists David Connearn, Phil Eglin and Charlotte Hodes, and considered the connections between drawing and making:
This publication will be a record and reflection of the show and will include essays and statements by the curators and artists, details of the events programme which accompanied the exhibition, and also installation shots of the show. Laboratory update
There is a great interview with Steven Eastwood on the Animate Projects APEngine website.
Laboratory charted a one month period of art production and experimentation on site at the gallery revealing some of the processes involved in making, hanging, curating, documenting and exhibiting. This unique exhibition focussed on supporting three artists, Steven Eastwood, Jock Mooney and Mia Taylor.
Film and Video Umbrella 'Memory Marathon'
Film and Video Umbrella commissions, curates and produces film, video and other moving-image works by artists which are presented in collaboration with galleries across the UK.
Film and Video Umbrella’s latest project is ‘Memory Marathon’ by Simon Pope, a film of 26-mile walk across London in the company of over 100 residents of the five boroughs that will host the 2012 Olympics. At Truman Brewery, London until March 14.

The Jerwood Gallery at Hastings
The Jerwood Gallery are generously supporting Sussex Coast College in Hastings to launch an open art prize. The Prize is open to all artists over 16 years living in Sussex to submit a proposal for an exhibition of new work for the Circle Gallery at the Sussex Coast College. The winning artist will also receive £3000 to create or produce new work for the show and to cover exhibition costs.
